A few years ago, we in collaboration with Tim Ahrens and FontShop created FontFonter as the first free tool to allow anyone to try and preview webfonts on any website.
With the completely new and more flexible WebFonter, you can now try and test Web FontFonts together with the 15,000+ webfonts available from FontShop.com in any existing site. You can replace headline or body text, specific fonts, or, using custom CSS selectors, anything you want with a typeface of your choosing.
WebFonter can be used during the design and development process – a critical time for font choice. The target website does not need to be publicly accessible in order to test-drive webfonts. This hugely important feature marries well with the current web design trend towards designing directly in the browser.
Available for free as a Chrome extension, browser bookmarklet or by entering a URL directly at webfonter.fontshop.com, this new tool will succeed FontFonter to make the web design process even better and as seamless as possible.permalink
2011 marked the most exciting year in FontFont history. The innovations that we launched this year received a warm welcome in the design and development communities and beyond.

The Wonderful World of Web FontFonts
Almost two years after FontFont became the first type manufacturer to release webfonts in the .woff format, the Web FontFont Library has grown into a Library of 3500 fonts. Compatible with more than 96% of all browsers, including Mobile Safari, webfonts are here to stay. Hundreds of websites currently use the popular FF DIN, FF Dax, FF Meta, FF Tisa, as well as many other FontFonts, to set themselves apart with beautiful design.
In 2011, we also improved the magical FontFonter service. With the help of FontFonter.com users can test-drive a large selection of Web FontFonts on any HTML site. To date, 42 sans serif and 22 serif families are available to preview in various combinations.
Subsetter.com, our online FontFont optimizer, which debuted in July, also gained a lot of popularity. Using Subsetter, FontFonts can be individually rebuilt, both in terms of file size as well as aesthetics. For instance: When you want to use oldstyle figures instead of tabular figures or do not need any language support, you can remove unnecessary characters and reduce the size of the webfont by up to 90%. When several weights are being used, small font files can dramatically lessen the burden of high traffic and speed up the load of the website.
Moving into Mobile
Recently, the mobile apps market became more typographically diverse. FontFont is the first foundry to answer the needs of this market with a customer friendly offer: Mobile FontFonts. They let you break from the mold of rather dull system fonts, with a simple and economical all-inclusive licence.
2011 was also an exciting year for many of our type designers. FontFont designers received 11 renowned awards in 2011, including those from Type Directors Club, ISTD International Typographic Awards, ATypI’s Type Design Competition Letter.2 and Communication Arts.
Our website FontFont.com, relaunched in April, was awarded, not only with the approval of our customers, but also by the jury of the iF Communication Design Awards (further information will follow soon).
For us, this successful year served as an incentive to continue our commitment to being the world’s fastest growing library of contemporary typefaces. No other foundry offers such a high release frequency of quality fonts. With the release of nearly 20 new or extended FontFont Families, we set the bar high again within the last 12 months. We are particularly proud of the fact that we are typographic home to both established, as well as emerging type designers from all over the world. They often express their enthusiasm for working together with our font technicians.
Our technical experts have performed splendidly once again in 2011: The entire library is now available in OpenType; the most popular FontFonts are available also in Office and, of course, in Web formats. In order to achieve a clearer structure, we split our library in three tiers, which takes into consideration diverse technical and conceptual needs and provides a better perspective to the FontFont Library.
2011 was indeed the most exciting year for us so far. – heavy emphasis on “so far”.
