Here’s what we’ve been polishing up lately: a real grotesque in text and headline sizes, a lettering-inspired text face made for long reads, and two new weights atop the popular FF DIN® typeface.
New Release: FF Real™
FF Real began as the voice of Erik Spiekermann’s biography Hello, I am Erik, drawn in just two styles, one for headlines and one for text. Each meaning of the word ‘real’ is employed in labeling this proper, authentic and regal sans, based closely on the original static grotesques of the turn of the twentieth century. Thirteen weights each.
New Release: FF Hertz™
A unique mixture of influences go into Jens Kutílek’s FF Hertz, from superelliptical faces like Zapf’s Melior® to German cartographic alphabets, all following certain modernist instincts. The result is a mighty and versatile text suite in six weights. One feature of note is FF Hertz’s uniwidth design—set text in a heavier weight without reflowing.
New Styles Extension: FF DIN®
The model European industrial sans, Albert-Jan Pool’s FF DIN keeps getting better. This latest update includes the addition of two new weights, Thin and Extra Light, across both condensed and normal widths, and also includes Greek support in the weights where before it was missing.
For about 20 years, Pool has been involved in the development of FF DIN, which today is one of our most popular font families. In 2011 the Museum of Modern Art in New York added FF DIN to its permanent collection further establishing the family as one of the most worldly recognised and respected. He is also responsible for adding FF DIN Round to the family and also created another technically orientated typeface: FF OCR-F.
Pictured here in his country house where he resides with his wife and daughter, we see evidence of Pool’s unabiding love of typography throughout the tasteful rooms. From the rows upon rows of typographic books to quirky and inspirational type design pieces hung about the walls this really is the home of a type fanatic.

The pronounced serifs make Mitja Miklavčič’s FF Tisa Web extremely legible. Its unique details—including slightly exaggerated ink traps and a fairly upright italic—are particularly visible in display sizes.permalink
We are in Hamburg and at home with type designer and creative director Achaz Reuss for the latest instalment of our ‘At Home With’ series. He is one design half (alongside Albert-Jan Pool) behind our bestseller FF DIN and is also responsible for one of our recent Über FontFonts, FF QType.
In green-scape surrounds, this classic modernist home takes on a quiet elegance and understated design sensibility. The beauty is in the finer details and the arrangement of the space and everything within it. Falmouth University based in Cornwall in South West England specializes in Art, Design, Media, Performance and Writing. Martin Majoor’s FF Scala family, including FF Scala Sans Web and FF Scala Web make an appearance throughout their website.
Klenk & Hoursch is a Strategic Communications agency based in Frankfurt am Main. They employ Xavier Dupré’s FF Yoga Sans throughout their site complemented by TypeTogether’s Adelle in the headers. Dupré’s FF Yoga Sans is a contemporary alternative to Gill Sans, and a sober companion to FF Yoga Serif.permalink
Two weeks ago we welcomed Wiebke Strotmann, a sixteen year old student from the Kreisgymnasium St Ursula in Haselünne, to the team for an internship with the Type Department. Under the guidance of our highly experienced Chief Font Technician, Inka, Wiebke spent seven days with us learning about all things FontFont with a focus specifically on type design.
Wiebke came well prepared having spent some time creating potato stamps, researching, reading and learning about the anatomy of type.
On her first day she came to the Berlin office to meet the team, immerse herself in the Type Department meetings and find out all about the company. Using the FF DIN potato prints as a starting point, she and Inka set about creating her own font. She spent a number of days scanning, copying and tracing the potato prints and then with the help of Inka’s eagle eye and some FontLab magic, the result became Erlkönig – a 5 weight family with a random feature (with four alternate versions of each glyph).
She also spent time practicing calligraphy, experimenting with collages and creating specimens. At only 16 years old and having never worked with Illustrator, Photoshop or InDesign before, we were amazed at how quickly she picked everything up.
The name Erlkönig derives from the german name for a prototype car but also is the name of a famous Goethe poem. Although Wiebke actually thought it was the name of a potato variety and so this became a leitmotiv throughout the PDF specimen that she created.
Since the launch of Web FontFonts almost three years ago, we have seen the web slowly transform from a dry and arid typographic landscape to one that is enriched and nourished by variety, flavour and choice. As part of a new monthly piece on our blog, we will present three sites we love, which feature Web FontFonts in use.
The Wunderkammer by the Hagströmer Medico-Historical Library offers a plethora of medical art treasures. Ranging from pamphlets to books to portraits their collection is fascinating. Adorning the captions, titles and navigation is Christian Schwartz’s grotesk workhorse, FF Bau.
Featuring FF Tisa Web in the body copy and URW’s Alternate Gothic in the headlines, Uncrate is the digital magazine for guys who love stuff. They post five new things every day to satiate the discerning design gentleman’s thirst for things and stuff.
Showtime is one of America’s premium networks with eleven channels, on their website you can catch up on some of the most popular shows and subscribe to their service. Used throughout their site is one of our FontFont bestsellers and Albert-Jan Pool’s modern classic, FF DIN.

The website for the VRB (Vorratsgesellschaft) organization based in Germany is set in one of the bestselling and most serious text faces, the formidable FF Scala and FF Scala Sans. The VRB offers ‘off the’ Shelf Companies and legal advice.
Two Arms Inc are a team of two, who combine illustration and design in a delightful manner. Based in Brooklyn they are famed for their passion for screenprinting. Their website employs FF Dagny, by Örjan Nordling and Göran Söderström. Great minds think alike, as we use it on our site too!

BERLIN, GERMANY, June 2010 – FSI FontShop International announced the latest additions to its award-winning FontFont® typeface library.
The new FontFonts
FF Amman came into existence as Yanone’s graduation project at Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany. In late 2008, Yanone set out to Amman, the capital of Jordan, following an invitation by Ahmad Humeid from the local design and branding office Syntax. They were to re-brand the capital’s municipality in preparation of Amman’s centennial celebrations.

Never officially commissioned as a custom typeface, it was rather a birthday present from Syntax and Yanone for Amman, and the perfect university graduation project for Yanone. In the end, the typeface with several typographic novelties has been widely used for all kinds of municipal services in Amman. The family consists of seven sans and four serif weights, each with their true Italics and both Latin and Arabic character sets. It is one of the largest bilingual families ever made, one of the few designed bilingually from scratch and the first containing true Arabic Italics.
FF DIN Round — This welcome addition to FontFont’s most popular family brings a softness to FF DIN’s simplicity and industrial sterility. FF DIN Round is more than a “search-and-replace” rounded version of its predecessor. Albert-Jan Pool and his team redrew each letterform to maintain the structure of the original. This ensures FF DIN and FF DIN Round will work well together in logos, slogans, price tags, etc. as compatible parts of advertising campaigns and corporate identities.
FF DIN Round is not only a good companion to FF DIN, its smooth and friendly curves make it work on its own for branding strategies for family cars, bikes, household appliances, sportswear, shoes, or medical products. It’s also very legible on screen.
FF Suhmo is inspired by classic Egyptian and typewriter fonts such as Courier and American Typewriter, which feature headline and text use. This impressive duality was Alex Rütten’s guideline for the concept of FF Suhmo. At the same time, many formal details were derived from the typical neon-lettering you can find on aged Italian restaurants in Germany. FF Suhmo has short ascenders and descenders and a generous x-height, making it a good choice for editorial design. It combines simplicity and functionality with playfulness, offering interesting details such as loops and swashes and a slight stroke contrast. Its varied details are unobtrusive in text sizes while developing character and sparkle in headlines.
FF Suhmo’s extensive character set includes numerous special characters and ligatures, several figure sets and small caps throughout all styles. The family consists of 4 weights: Light, Regular, Bold and Black, each with an Italic. The weights were staggered to complement each other within a layout, the Black corresponding to the Regular and the Light corresponding to the Bold weight, allowing words or phrases to be clearly stressed within a text. The Italics are lighter than the Roman and have a relatively slight angle of slope. The forms are derived from a manual writing process and often cross the base-line or the x-height.read more
Typographic diversity – A new era for web design

A more diverse and beautiful web is about to unfold.
