We are proud to announce that
"Little Yellow Writing Hood"
has won the
reddot design award 2005
in the category communication design.
FSI commissioned
Strange Attractors Design
(Catelijne van Middelkoop and Ryan Pescatore Frisk) to create and produce an animation for the
FontFont exhibition
FiFFteen.
Positioned as a typographic fairly tale, "Little Yellow Writing Hood" uses over
300 typefaces from the FontFont library.
In addition, "Little Yellow Writing Hood" was judged as worthy of citation
for typographic excellence and for showing in the annual
Type Directors Club
exhibition for 2004 and Typography 26.
Big Honors for FontFonts
We are proud to announce that
FF Absara
took honors in this year's
TDC2
type design competition. Xavier Dupré's latest FontFont,
along with other award-winning types, will be published in the
TDC annual, Typography 26, and showcased in a traveling exhibition.
FF Angkoon and FF Unit awarded Certificates of Excellence in Type Design by the Type Directors Club
The Type Directors Club Type Design Competition (TDC2) is widely
regarded as the premiere venue for the world's best in type design. The
annual competition is judged each year by a new international panel of
respected type designers. This year's jury included Veronika Elsner,
Josh Darden, Dmitry Krasny, Pablo Medina and Charles Nix. FF Angkoon,
by Xavier Dupré, and FF Unit, by Erik Spiekermann, were among the
winners selected from more than 100 entries. The two FontFont originals
will be published in Typography 25, the annual of the Type Directors
Club, and will join a touring exhibit of typography to open this summer
in New York City. The show will travel throughout North and South
America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and East Asia.
The FontFont library is not new to the TDC2. Another FontFont family,
FF Strada, won top honours last year in the 2003 competition.
FF Unit also won an award from the German Art Directors Club at their
annual judging in March this year.
TDC2 2003
We are happy to announce
that FF Strada is among the winning entries in the TDC2 2003, the Type
Design Competition of the Type Directors Club. There were 119 submissions
from twenty countries. Fifteen entries were selected by the jury to represent
the best in type design for the year 2002.
Winning entries will
be included in the 2003 TDC Annual, Typography 24, and will tour with the
TDC49 Typography exhibition. The exhibition will open in the Summer of 2003
in New York.
Danish Design Prize 2002
Danish Design Prize 2002 in the category of Best Typeface Design
The jurys statement:
FF Signa is awarded the Danish Design Prize 2002 as a stylish, distinct
and high quality typeface. The quality is consistently present in the
individual letters, numbers and other characters and in the many styles
that are included in the large Signa family - with FF Signa Correspondence
as the latest addition, a digital TrueType font for the PC. The jury wishes
to express its admiration for the continuing and consistent development
of the typeface. The digitised version is very well done and works regardless
of screen type, which will help secure the future of the typeface. In
the detail, the boldface types and the beautiful styling of the numbers
are especially convincing. FF Signa wins due to its combination of elegant
simplicity and strong character. There is no doubt that the work with
the font is based on enthusiasm and an eye for the larger picture, and
the jury wishes to commend the graphic craftsmanship that it reflects.
bukva:raz!
ATypI (Association
Typographique Internationale) sponsored the international competition
of type design bukva:raz! as a special contribution to the United Nations
Year of Dialogue among Civilizations 2001. The name of the competition
translates as "letter:one!"; bukva is the Russian word for "letter"
(as in letterform) and raz for "one" (as in two thousand one).
Bukva:raz! is aimed at promoting cultural pluralism and encouraging diversity,
interaction and co-operation in typographic communications. Type designers
from many regions and nations, of various ethnic, linguistic and cultural
backgrounds had been invited to contribute to the contest. We had asked
our FontFont designers to submit their FontFonts and here are the winners:
Michael Abbink: FF Kievit
Martin Majoor: FF Seria & FF Seria Sans
ISTD Awards 2001
The International
Society of Typographic Designers, with jurors Derek Birdsall, Anita Boyd,
David Carson, Fred Flade, Chris Foges, Vince Frost, Lucienne Roberts and
Erik Torstensson, have chosen two of our FontFont families for ISTD International
TypoGraphic Awards 2001. The awards ceremony took place in London on November
27th, 2001.
FF Kievit by Michael
Abbink has won a Premier award and FF Seria/FF Seria Sans by Martin Majoor
has won a Certificate of Excellence.
The total number of
entries was 550. Forty-four Certificates of Excellence and 23 Premier
Awards have been awarded. The work accepted as being eligible for a Certificate
of Excellence have shown a high standard of design in conjunction with
a high standard of typography, the criteria being that excellent typography
is an intrinsic element of the overall design solution. Premier Awards
have been chosen from the work which has met the criteria for a Certificate
of Excellence, but which is also outstanding in the view of the majority
of the jurors.
Type Directors Club Type Design Competition 2000
The judging of the
Type Directors Club Type Design Competition 2000 took place in New York

Maxim Zhukov chaired the Jury.
One hundred two designers
from twenty-four countries participated in the competition. One hundred
eighty-five entries competed in five categories: Text designs, Display
designs, Text/display type systems, Type superfamilies, and Pi fonts.
Eighteen entries have
been chosen by the Jury of TDC2 2000 to receive the Certificates of Excellence
in Type Design. All winning entries will be included in Typography 21,
the annual publication of the Type Directors Club, and shown at the TDC
Awards Exhibition in New York City, from June through mid-September 2000;
they will also be included in the exhibitions touring the United States,
Canada, Europe, Southeast Asia, Japan, Mexico and Australia.
The winning FontFont
typefaces in the Type Directors Club Type Design Competition 2000 are:
FF Clifford by Akira Kobayashi and FF Profile by Martin Wenzel. Both typeface
families won in the text designs category.
FF Info wins Critic's Award in THE BIG CRIT 1998
When
Critique magazine called for entries for their annual design contest, FSI
rose to the occasion by sending in FF Info and FF Dax as candidates for
the typographic category of the competition. The judges for the typographic
category included none less than Matthew Carter and Ellen Lupton. Erik Spiekermann's
FF Info won the award for its "personal" nature, clarity, legibility and
simplicity of form - to name only a few of the listed qualities. The judges'
review ended with the statement, "This is a significant design. The world
will benefit from this typeface, and designers will put it to good use."
FF Dax got honorable mention and was displayed in the special issue of the
magazine. Both fonts made it into the 4% of entries that were accepted to
the competition, and FF Info was among the top 1% that won an award. Complimentary
copies of the magazine special edition were sent to the top 100 design clients
in America.
